Here's the last trick or treat special. It was thirty years ago today when Halloween debuted. In 2006, it was selected for preservation as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Many have suggested that the film is a social critique of the immorality of young people in 1970s America, as many of the victims are either sexually promiscuous, substance abusers, or both (nothing new under the sun, right?), while the lone survivor is depicted as chaste and innocent (but she is seen sneakin' a toke or two). The film's director, however, denied any merit to such a claim, saying: "She's the one that's killed him. Not because she's a virgin but because all that sexually repressed energy starts coming out." The perceived parallel between the characters' moral strengths and their survivial to the film's conclusion has nevertheless become a standard slasher movie motif. uncle mikey finds this tone (and the director's insight) to be much creepier than the Main Theme by far, but to each their own. |
