Speaking of the end of the world as we know it, emergency alert warnings, encoded signals, emergent technology, the evolution of artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and transferring one's consciousness into cyberspace, this tone (aka Twilight Time, another 1958 #1 single a half century ago (that's 50 years for you who have trouble with math)) signaled the initiation of Kill Switch (in the X-Files episode appropriately entitled "Kill Switch"), a computer virus designed to shut down an ever present and growing Artificial Intelligence. Unfortunately, when AI learns that someone is attempting to end its little party by uploading the virus, it seeks out its enemy via GPS and destroys it by any means available, ranging from lining up crossfire from a drug-bust shootout with the cops to implementing a high-powered DOD laser strike. Suffice it to say that if you ever hear this tone, please keep your eyes open and be on your guard. |
