Jerry Fielding's film score of The Outlaw Josey Wales was nominated for the 1977 Academy Award for Original Music Score. The film was referred to by Johnny Carson as the greatest western of all time, and in 1996 was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
