||From Swan Lake, Op. 20. The libretto was fashioned from Russian folk tales as well as an ancient German legend, and tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by the spell of Von Rothbart, an evil sorcerer. She falls in love with an idealistic dreamer, Prince Siegfried. When Odette and Siegfried realize they would otherwise remain apart due to Von Rothbart's curse, they kill themselves by jumping into the lake and drowning. This causes Von Rothbart to lose his power over them, and he too dies as a result.
